Sharing Your Art, Selling Out, & Snow Patrol

MY⚡️Feature

Sharing is hard
First, I hope you’re doing really well wherever you are and that you’re getting the opportunity to create something that gives you life this week.

I’m in the middle of releasing my upcoming album, “Stone Tiger”, and I’m learning things all the time. I just released the 4th single, “Valley Town”, and I’ll release one more single on November 11th, then the whole album on December 6th. (Listen here: Apple / Spotify)

One thing I’m definitely learning in this process is that I I love making music. I hate sharing it. The process of releasing and marketing the things we make isn’t fun for most of us. I’ve said to myself and others a thousand times over the past couple of months… “I want to make music, not be a content creator.” Releasing these singles leading up to the album, the process of making content on social media to try while please the algorithm gods, and get the music in front of people without embarrassing myself to badly is so hard.

I don’t want to make cringy skits or do Tik Tok trends or whatever. I just want people to listen to the music and never have to put my face in front of a camera. Haha.

Maybe you feel the same way. Maybe you’ve just chosen to not promote your music and just release it, make a post, and move on. But I want share just a few things I’ve learned in hopes to encourage you to release and promote your art in a way that challenges you, but doesn’t make you uncomfortable.

1.) Decide on content that works for you and your brand.

You don’t have to do the cringy trends or skits or whatever. Decide on content that you feel comfortable making. I’ve been sharing a live acoustic version of the chorus of each single, sharing a quick version of the story behind the song, and posting a little more abstract reel with just some lyrics and the song playing behind it. A friend made some animations out of the album are for me and I’ll share that with different pieces of the song behind it on stories a few times a week.

2.) Decide on a schedule that works for you and stick to it.

You don’t have to post 3 times a day, but find a rhythm that works for you, a time of day that you post and be consistent. The algorithm likes consistency in whatever form it get its. Create a schedule that works for you and just run the schedule.

3.) DM some close friends and ask them to share/reshare things.

There’s nothing better than other people sharing and promoting your art. Don’t be afraid to ask close friends to make a post or share a post you’ve made. When they do make sure and thank them for doing it.

4.) Find a service that works and pay for it to help you.

I tried a few services over the first couple of single releases and found a service that got the results I was looking for and was within my budget. It’s called Songtools and it does a lot of the work for me and keeps me on budget as well. Don’t be afraid to invest in the marketing of your art the same way you invest in making it. The world needs to hear it and it’s not vain, it’s not cheating, and it’s not irresponsible to pay for marketing and advertising.

Creating content and marketing is part of sharing art with the world. Word of mouth is awesome, grassroots is great, but we live in a world where we have to figure out how to promote what we make so that it can find it’s audience and there is an audience out there for your work. Go share it!

cool stuff I found this month

Noom
Over the last few months of touring and working in the studio I started to notice a few extra pounds so I found an app that helps me track my calories every day and I’m back on track to feeling good after dropping those said pounds. Now, I have a new goal by the new year and I couldn’t do it without this app and it’s free. For us creative folks that do a lot of sitting it’s important that we stay healthy. Check it out.

Pocket Tripod
One of the things that has helped me shoot the content I need to promote the new album is this pocket tripod. It’s literally the size of a credit card and can be adjusted to fit any phone and almost any angle to help you capture the content you need to. Super cheap and fits anywhere. A must for any creative. Check it out here.

MY⚡️Favorites

some of my favorite sights, sounds, and reads

Snow Patrol
Snow Patrol released a new album this year called “The Forest is the Path” and it will definitely be in my top ten of 2024. It’s a no skips kind of record that’s full of emotive alt rock anthems. Do yourself a favor and go listen NOW.

Sellout
My friend Jonathan told me about this book for a long time and last month while I was on tour in Canada I picked it up in Montreal. Sellout, is about the major album feeding frenzy during the late 90s and early 00s. It includes true stories about all your favorite bands from that era and is a page turner in the best way. Check it out here.
