Like What You Like

MY⚡️Feature

Like what you like
Have you ever been in the car with friends and a song comes on that you love and everyone starts ripping on it? Ever taken someone to a restaurant that you love and they didn’t really like it? Ever started talking about a movie that you really liked only to have everyone else in the conversation make fun of you for it?

I certainly have… haha. I get ragged on all the time for loving hair metal. We’re all different and that’s a great thing. We have different likes and dislikes and all of our taste for food, film, music, and more are all different.

As a creative person, we can’t be afraid to like what we like and love what we love. That’s our taste and it’s what makes us unique. We do, however, need to do 2 things with our personal taste.

Learn it.

Develop it.

Here’s what I mean…

We need to learn why we like what we do. Have you ever thought about your favorite music and why you actually like it? There is no wrong or right reason, but knowing helps us to understand why we gravitate toward that style, that band, or that song. That can help us build confidence around our taste.

We may love that music because it’s nostalgic for us, we may love it because of the way it makes us feel, or that we identify with the artist on a personal level, or a myriad of other reasons.

Understanding why we like or dislike things is helpful in a lot of ways, but it leads us to the next thing we need to do…

Develop our taste.

I love sushi. I’ve gotten my son into it and now he loves going to try sushi at different sushi restaurants. He usually orders a staple roll and then tries something unique to that restaurant. It’s both enjoying what he knows he loves and expanding his taste at the same time.

This experience is helpful in our art as well. It’s great to listen to the bands that we already know and love, but we should always be trying to expand our musical taste by listening to bands that are fresh and doing new things.

As we develop our personal taste it builds our confidence, not only in the things we enjoy that other artists make, but it also builds our confidence in the art we are creating as well.

We need that confidence to keep creating, to believe in what we create, and to keep us from compromising when feel pressured by industry, marketplace, or some other outside force to change our art so other people will like it.

Learn your taste. Develop your taste. Make art that you love.
