Meet Your Heroes
I’ve mentioned this before, but my older brother and I go to a lot of concerts. We both love live music and both of us are really influenced by a lot of the same artists. The other day we were texting about some plans for our latest adventure, seeing The Rolling Stones again. I was telling my brother we should go hit a few cool spots and hang in ATL during the day before the show. He said, “We can do that or we can just go stand outside the artist entrance at the stadium all day so we can try and meet Keith Richards.”
He knows that Keith is my biggest musical influence. I love the Stones, but I really love Keith’s style and playing and songwriting. It’s been a massive influence on my own playing style, writing, and love of rock n roll.
I’ve read Keith’s biography and listened to it on audiobook. I’ve also listened to or read books about Springsteen, Johnny Marr, Drew Brees, Basquiat, Slash, Bono, and numerous other musicians, leaders, business gurus, and more.
I want to encourage you to study your influences. Study those people whose work you admire. Also, study those people who are pioneers in your genre or industry and most importantly study those people who’s values you admire. Read biographies, listen to podcasts, and draw inspiration from their journey and their processes.
You may not share similar life values and goals, but you don’t have to in order to admire someone’s creativity and the work that they’ve done. It’s meant to inspire you on your own journey.
I also want to encourage you to reach out to those people who inspire and influence you. We live in a day and age where people are just a DM away sometimes. I just watched a TikTok of a girl who messaged Lil’ Wayne and he responded with a really encouraging message.
Years ago, I messaged, then New Orleans Saints punter, Thomas Morstead on twitter. To my shock he responded and we met up in New Orleans for a drink that evening. We stayed in touch and he hosted my family and I for a couple of Saints games and invited us to meet some of the team and gave us the experience of a life time. All because of a tweet.
I’ve also been fortunate enough to be able to interview some of my favorite creative people on my podcast like Steve Brown, Todd Kerns, Dorothea Taylor, Todd Henry and more. I literally just sent them a DM on Instagram and we connected. I’ll probably never get a chance to hang out with Keith Richards, but you never know.
Be grateful for your inspirations and influences. Study them, their work, and their rhythms. Study the people that inspired them and make sure and reach out to them some how. You never know. Tonight you could be messaging with one of your heroes.
Respond to this email or DM me on social media and tell me some of your influences!
