Creative Leadership
I wish I could spend everyday just making music, but if you’re a creative of any kind you know that there is so much more to being creative than people understand. For me, as a musician, I have business things to handle, invoices to send, expenses to log, websites to manage, subscriptions to maintain, IT stuff to handle, apps to update, a studio to keep organized, and those are just the tasks I can think of right now.
There are so many aspects of being a creative person other than simply just being creative, but you have to make sure that you can do all the parts of the job well so that you can flourish. I want to talk about several of these over the coming weeks of MYFI Monday emails, but today I want to talk about creative leadership.
You make think that you aren’t a leader, but you are. Everyone is to a certain degree.
Leaders are simply people that manage responsibilities and manage other people. The scope and degree may vary for you in what you do, but you are a creative leader.
Let me paint a picture for you.
I’m making a solo record right now that is due out in September. Not only am I making the record, but I’m working with the graphic designer on the artwork, the vinyl plant, the mix engineer, the mastering studio, and more in order to make it happen. I’m managing the schedules, sharing the vision and meaning behind the project, setting goals, building a release schedule, working with a marketing advisor, managing my budget, and a myriad of other things.
I want to be great at all those things so that the record is great and the release goes as well and smoothly as possible. I have to be a great leader to make sure that happens.
I have to communicate well. I have to deliver things on time and make sure the people I’m working with deliver things on time as well. I have to share the vision of what I’m doing with the people I’m working with in a way that will inspire them to do their part as well as they can.
I’m not just the artist, writer, and producer on this project. I’m a creative leader that’s managing the project as well. Things in your world are similar, at least in some way.
We focus a lot on the art we make and we work hard at becoming a better artist, but we can’t neglect becoming a better leader in the process. It’s one of the reasons that I do creative coaching. I want to help creatives get better in every aspect. I want to help creatives to keep growing so that we can create and share our art with the world.
Reply to this email and I’ll share a couple of podcasts and books with you that have been helpful to me in growing as a creative leader.
