Don’t Go Alone
Over this last season of my life I’ve been building 2 things that I would really love to do forever. I’ve been building a business coaching creative people and being a consultant for creative leaders and organizations. I’ve also been building a music career as an artist, a producer, a songwriter, a composer, and session guitarist. It’s all been going really well, but it’s also really hard work. There are things that have helped to make it easier, but none more than the creative community I have around me.
It’s easier to do hard things when you aren’t doing them alone.
As a creative, I find myself working by myself a lot. It’s just the nature of writing, producing, and even coaching and consulting. But I’m grateful that I’m not alone. I am fortunate to be surrounded by close friends who are also creatives and I’ve learned a similar lesson from all of them.
Be the kind of person you want to work with…
Loads of my friends come to mind. Nick, Kervin, Timmy, Jonathan, and Alin just to name a few. These guys are all generous, humble, and excellent at what they do. They’re encouraging, but they’re also honest. They text just to check in and not because they need something. They’re vulnerable about their work and their lives. We hold each other up and we hold each other to high standards. We lean on each other and fight for each other.
You may say, “Good for you, man, but I don’t have people like that.” Well, start being that person to the people around you and the community will form. Some people will blow you off, some will push you away, but those like-minded and like-hearted people will latch on.
Now, it takes effort. Prioritizing hanging out, being at each other’s birthdays, buying each other’s art, sharing each other’s work, prioritizing communication with each other. Community takes work, but it’s worth it a million times over not just because of what it does for you, but also because of what it does to you.
The creative friends in my life teach me so much about the kind of person I want to be and the kind of person I want to become. We all want friendship and community in our lives, but we can’t just expect it to fall in our laps. We have to reach out. We have to prioritize. We have to support. We have to be ourselves. Those things aren’t easy sometimes.
The creative community I’m a part of helps me to be the kind of person I want to work with and it turns out that other people want to work with that kind of person too.
I try my best to be humble, to have integrity, and to do my best at everything I do. That has led me to good places, surrounded by good people and I think it will do the same for you.
